Company - history


In the end of the thirties Max E. Russenberger had a first contact to the material testing technology. Later he got senior chief engineer at the testing machine company Alfred J. Amsler & Co. where he designed the resonant testing technology for the first time, what gave him a worldwide tribute.

In 1964 Max E. Russenberger founded his own business. His particular aim in the new company was to design and build dynamic material testing systems. The main product line was the high frequency resonant pulsator or, in other words, resonant testing machines. In a later stage Erwin Müller, also a former Amsler employee, joined the company as a partner. Out of these two names the abbreviation RUMUL has been originated.

In 1978 Roland Berchtold took over the company and from this time on the official name of the company was RUSSENBERGER PRÜFMASCHINEN AG, but still the shortened form RUMUL is in use.

In 1989 the company moved into a new and larger Company building in Neuhausen am Rheinfall.

In 1995 Jürg Berchtold joined the company after his engineer studies and after his visits abroad. Today he is in charge of development of control systems and software.

The concept of the resonant testing machine TESTRONIC is based on the latest possibilities in resonant testing machine engineering.
Many decades of experiences in devloping and manufacturing of resonant testing machines and also our continuous task to support our customers in their testing needs are the benefit .

The main application for a resonant testing machine are tests with a large number of load cycles. On the machine table with T-Nuts is possible to perform complicate test arrangements. The daylight of 500 mm between the columns allows the installation of a furnace, environmental or vacuum chamber.

Resonant testing machines can stress specimens or structures with a dynamic load superimposed to a static load. The dynamic load is generated by an oscillating system (resonator) which runs in its natural frequency. The oscillating system consists of masses and springs whereas the structure or the specimen which has to be tested is also part of.

Comparision of costs between
Resonant Testing Machine and
Servohydraulic testing machine

The following comparision shows the running costs of two testing machines suitable for dynamic loads in the middle to high frequency ranges. A RUMUL high frequency resonant testing machine TESTRONIC 100 kN and a modern servohydraulic machine are compared. The key features are delivered from a large testing laboratory with many years of experiences with all kind of testing machines. Two characteristic features mark the comparison; precisely the high frequency and the low power consumption.

A) The resonant testing machine is designed as a mechanical oscillating system and consists of masses and springs. Also the specimen with its elasticity is part of this system. The natural frequency is excited by an electromagnet. Typical frequencies for such machines are in the range of 50-250 Hertz and the needed energy consumption is about 0.5 kW.

B) The servohydraulic testing machine loads the specimen with a hydraulic actuator which is operating in a servo-loop. For frequencies in the range of 50 Hertz rather efficient equipment has to be used. The testing load for each cycle has to be built-up by oil pressure, which means that the neccessary energy is needed for each cycle. Practically all the energy is transformed into heat and has to be carried off by an additional cooling system.

The comparison has been simplified in serveral points without falsifying the essential. The amortisation has been distributed regularly to 8 years. To take into consideration the reduction of interest for the sinking investment the interest of 12 % has been parted to 6 %. This means that for the first years of the amortisation period the interest is too little but this will be compensated during the last years. The calculation does not consider engineering- and space-costs.
